Ode to Cheap Tacos

♫ Buy me some peanuts and cheap tacos... ♫

That, my friends, is what I ate for dinner last night. Oh yes, it was the Rockies cheap tacos special. For years, Taco Bell has offered a promotion that if the Rockies score 7 runs or more, the next day between 4pm and 6pm, you can buy four regular tacos for a dollar with the purchase of a drink. So far in this young season, there have been four cheap taco opportunities...

* * * * *

Not only is this the greatest fast food promotion ever, but as an added bonus the Rockies seem to perform better whenever I follow through and eat cheap tacos. Case in point, while I was inside buying my cheap tacos on 4/8, Jason Giambi clubbed a three run HR, the Rox' only offense of the night.

The cheap tacos mojo manifest itself most prominently in June of 2009. On 6/4/11, the Rockies sat at 12 games under .500. That day they beat Houston with a 10-3 final score. The Rockies followed that win with three more taco-producing wins. I did my duty and ate my cheap tacos each time, but faced a dilemma when the Rockies finished a four game sweep of the Cardinals with a 5-2 win. I decided to keep things rolling and wound up eating Taco Bell until the Rockies had consecutive losses against the Angels on 6/23 and 6/24. In all, the Rockies had 17 wins in 18 games and my body endured three weeks of horrible nutrition nicely. Hey, it was a great diversion from studying for the bar.

Now the taco mojo is not infallible. Exhibit A: last night. Nevertheless, the mojo is real. I shudder to think how poorly the Rockies would have played had I not eaten cheap tacos. If you're not a fan of mass-produced, unhealthy Mexican food, perhaps you might still enjoy the promotion for its commercials:

"Hey hey! I got your tacos right here!"

  1. Last night, I ate cheat tacos, too. Besides winning baseball games, the Rockies can certainly help a family's food budget. I've been known to invite friends and relatives out to eat on Cheap Tacos Night. I Pay. Sadly, inflation has hit cheap tacos along with everything else. Last year and this year, it's four regular tacos for $2 with the purchase of a drink. I always buy the 50 cent drink and get free refills. GO ROCKS! SCORE 7!

  2. Woo Hoo for cheap tacos! Too bad the Twins don't have such a deal.
    I recently heard on the world news that TB claimed validation after the AL lawsuit was dropped-- even though TB still isn't adding any more meat to the mix

    Three cheers for junk food!

  3. http://www.youtube.com/tacobell "Lawyers Got it Wrong! We made no changes to our products or ingredients." - TB CEO. There's a lot of difference between 35% beef and 88% beef. But today the Rockies made their statement - We're not settling for 7 runs. We're scoring 10 runs on the Giants! Way to Go, Rocks!
